
Yukon's mighty Polar Bears roar past the Bad Axe Lumberjacks, saving their best baseball for the post-season
You can see the boxscores by clicking on the Game number below. These games were played live in Toledo this weekend, but there was one game that was accidentally simulatedat the start, throwing off the won-loss records in the box-score.
Game 1: A pitchers duel between Yukon's Christy Mathewson and Bad Axe's Smokey Joe Williams starts this series off. A Cristobel Torriente home run and hits by Paul Waner and Biz Mackey brought in a total of 3 Polar Bear runs off of Smokey Joe. Christy "Big Six" Mathewson holds the Lumberjacks to just two runs, spacing out seven hits. Yukon takes a 1-0 lead in the series.
Game 2: Yukon gets to Bob Gibson in the middle innings, putting up 9 runs on 17 hits. Jud Wilson is 3 for 4 with a homer and 4 RBIs. Martin Dihigo has 3 hits, while Turkey Stearnes, George Sisler, Paul Waner, and George Davis each added 2 hits. Three Finger Brown provides the pitching, holding Bad Axe to 5 runs. George Kell collected three hits for the Lumberjacks. Yukon wins two on the road and heads pack to the Great White North.
Game 3: Carl Hubbell has his screwball really moving in the harsh temperature and strong winds of the Yukon. He shuts out Bad Axe, only allowing six hits. The Flying Dutchman, Honus Wagner is 4 for 5 with 5 RBIs for Yukon. George Sisler and Red Schoendienst contribute two hits. Final is 8-0, Yukon now leads the series 3 games to 0.
Game 4: Cy Young Award winner Smokey Joe Williams looked more like Shakey Joe Williams this game, allowing 17 hits through eight innings, but he was able to limit the damage to just four runs. Christy Mathewson was tagged for home runs by Jimmie Foxx and Kirby Puckett, and this one was tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the 9th. Smokey Joe allowed a single to Cristobel Torriente, another to Jud Wilson, and finally a walk-off single to Paul Waner, Yukons wins the game 5-4 and the series 4-0!
