Yukon wins an exciting World Series!

The World Series between the Backwoods Bastards and the Yukon Polar Bears was a tremendous and hard-fought battle!

The Mule comes through again for the Bastards

Game 1:  Randy Johnson gets the Bastards off to a good start by whiffing 11 Polar Bears and holding the potent Yukon attack to just 3 runs.  Mule Suttles provides the offensive fireworks for Backwoods, going 4 for 5 with a homer, 2 runs and 5 RBIs.  Final is 9-3 Bastards.  Christy Mathewson takes the loss.

Game 2:  Yukon answers back with some late offense (3 runs in the 7th, 4 in the 8th) to take the second game 10-4.  Turkey Stearnes and Martin Dihigo both go yard, and Paul Waner and Biz Mackey add two hits apiece.  All Polar Bear batsmen got at least 1 hit.  Three Finger Brown goes the distance for Yukon.  Series is tied 1-1.

Game 3:  Pie Traynor broke open a close game with a sixth-inning two-run homer off of Carl Hubbell to send Backwoods to victory, 5-3, over the Polar Bears.  Traynor had 3 hits for the Bastards, and Oscar Charleston added two hits.  Big Bill Foster got the win, and John Clarkson the save, Bastards go up 2-1 for the Series.

Game 4:  Yukon comes back with an offensive onslaught, getting 4 hits from Honus Wagner and 3 RBIs from Mike Piazza to trounce Backwoods 8-4.  Christy Mathewson was generous, allowing at least one hit to every Bastard except for Luis Santop, but limited the number of runs to earn the victory.  Series is now 2-2.

Don Sutton is congratulated on his big win by super-fan
and singer of the big hit "Muskrat Love" Toni Tennille.
  No sign of the Captain!

Game 5:  Backwoods blasts Three Finger Brown, racking up 8 runs and 12 hits as they roar to an 8-3 win over Yukon.  Another big game from Pie Traynor (3 for 5), and the Bastards got home runs from Hank Aaron, Mule Suttles, and Travis Jackson.  Don Sutton holds the Polar Bears to just 8 hits, two from Honus Wagner and two from George Davis.  Backwoods takes a 3-2 lead and is now just one win away from the title!

Game 6:  Yukon has their backs against the wall, and respond with a magnificent outing from Carl Hubbell.  The master of the screwball blanks the Bastards, spreading seven hits and not allowing a single run.  Cristobel Torriente singled in pinch-runner Martin Dihigo in the fourth, giving the Polar Bears just enough to win the game 1-0.  The Series is tied, we go to a Game 7 in the Yukon!

Game 7:  Yukon runs away with the deciding game, 6-1.  Randy Johnson and Christy Mathewson faced off in this final game of the year.  The Big Unit vs Big Six!  It was no contest, however, as Mathewson scattered seven singles and limited the Bastards to just 1 run.  Randy Johnson racked up 9 K's, but was tagged for all six runs.  Honus Wagner, George Sisler, Martin Dihigo, and Biz Mackey all had two hits for the Polar Bears.

What a great and fun season, thanks to all of you for playing!!!  Looking forward to another Retro League next year!
